Mike Pence has hired McGuireWoods' Richard Cullen as outside legal counsel to handle inquiries related to the special counsel investigation into Russian efforts to interfere with the 2016 election, NBC News has confirmed.

Cullen previously served as Virginia attorney general and US attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia. To represent him in the ongoing Russian investigation, U.S. Vice President Mike Pence has hired his own lawyer.

That's according to a statement from Pence spokesman Jarrod Agen.

"At the President's direction, I'll be traveling to Central and South America later this year, to continue to build on the good work that is being done at this conference", said Vice President Pence. "There is no evidence of collusion between our campaign and any Russian officials". He represented Tom DeLay, a Texas Republican and former majority leader of the U.S. House of Representatives, during the investigation into corrupt Washington lobbyist Jack Abramoff. The vice president was kept in the dark for almost two weeks about Flynn's false statements before learning the truth in a Post report. He also said the US wants to secure its borders to "bolster USA national security" as part of the agenda of President Donald Trump.

Examining the possibility of obstruction charges will allow investigators to interview key administration figures including Attorney General Jeff Sessions, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and possibly Trump himself, said the source familiar with the Mueller investigation.

Pence's outside counsel selection process has been going on for weeks, and there was no singular event that prompted his decision to hire an outside lawyer. Spiro T. Agnew, Richard Nixon's vice president, retained outside counsel when he came under investigation on charges of extortion, tax fraud, bribery and conspiracy.

And Vice President Dick Cheney consulted Terrence O'Donnell, a partner at Williams & Connolly, on several issues during his time in the Bush administration.
