The number of violent crimes reported to Providence police ticked up slightly in 2016, but not at the same pace that homicides, rapes, robberies and aggravated assaults have grown throughout the country.

The total number of property crimes reported, 5,073, also represents a 30-year low.

But it's not all good news, violent crime is up. If officers showed up at the scene of a murder and finds their suspect also robbed their victim and was carrying drugs, the only crime they would report to the Federal Bureau of Investigation was the most severe - in this case, the murder.

He noted that Chicago, which has been experiencing an unprecedented spike in murders over the past several years, was responsible for about 20 percent of the national net increase in homicides. It dropped 18 percent from 2007, and the murder rate was 6 percent lower than it was the same year, according to the data.

In the city of San Diego, there were 50 murders previous year among the city's more than 1.4 million residents, equating to a rate of 3.5 murders per 100,000 residents. The statewide property crime rate is down 63 percent since 1980.

This year's hike by 49,000 means about 13 more violent crimes for every 100,000 people living in the United States.

There were 78 murders and non-negligent manslaughters in the state in 2016, a substantial decrease from 2015 when there were 116.
