A fast-moving brush fire has destroyed or damaged multiple homes in the Anaheim Hills area, and about 1,000 other residences remain threatened as the wind-whipped wildfire continued to burn out of control amid a red flag warning. It also triggered hourslong freeway closures.

The smoke over the park was coming from a fire churning through canyons in hilly neighbourhoods of Orange County, where residents of about 1,000 homes were forced to evacuate and a state of emergency was declared.

"We are monitoring the situation minute by minute and will resume classes when the local fire and health authorities, as well as campus leadership, determine that it is safe, " said Chapman spokeswoman Sheri Ledbetter.

Yuba County spokesman Russ Brown said the unidentified person was in a vehicle fleeing from the town of Loma Rica, ran off a back road and became trapped in the blaze. This was the original Canyon Fire, which prompted dozens of evacuations in Corona.
