Four powerlifters died in a road accident caused due to dense fog

Five national-level weightlifters were killed, including a world champion, when the auto in which they were travelling met with an accident in dense fog early on Sunday, police said.

Yadav had won gold in the push-pull raw powerlifting competition in the juniors 82.5kg category at the World Grand Prix held by the Global Powerlifting Alliance and the International Powerlifting Organisation in Slovakia a year ago. The possibility of drunken driving has also not been ruled out.

The car-a Swift Dezire compact sedan, in which they were travelling, first hit the divider and then cashed into a pole on the highway. Saksham Yadav (28), who died in the evening at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences trauma center, had won a gold medal in the 2017 weightlifting championship. Due to severe impact, the car's roof was blown away. All the other athletes including Bali were residents of Timarpur in north Delhi.

Police said that they were driving towards Karnal in Haryana after the birthday celebrations of one of the occupants of the vehicle.

According to reports, preliminary investigations have revealed that the vehicle was speeding and the driver lost control over the wheel.

Preliminary police inquiry had revealed that the mishap happened around 4 am when the driver of the auto in which the six men were travelling lost control over the speeding vehicle and crashed into a divider near a petrol pump.

The auto involved in the accident was smashed beyond recognition. They were taken to Raja Harish Chandra Hospital in Narela here and declared dead by doctors, the police officer told IANS. Saksham was shifted to Max Hospital while Rohit who had his birthday on Saturday was shifted to LNJP Hospital.

Bottles of liquor were reportedly found in the auto.

"Prima facie, the vehicle was at a very high speed". All of them were having birthday celebrations. It can not be ruled out that the bad weather conditions or fog led to the accident.

Players killed in the accident have been identified as Tikamchand, Saurabh, Yogesh and Harish.
