NVIDIA has confirmed a new partnership with ride-hailing service Uber and auto giant Volkswagen to further the development of self-driving vehicle technology.

During the opening of the CES tech conference in Las Vegas, Nevada Nvidia boss Jensen Huang explained that Uber is using his company's AI technology in its fleet of developmental self-driving cars.

Uber isn't the only one getting cozier to Nvidia and its self-driving tech.

Electric versions of the iconic Volkswagen van were originally announced in 2015, while the non-electric originals ceased production in 2003.

"Artificial intelligence is revolutionizing the vehicle", said Volkswagen CEO Dr. Herbert Diess. "Autonomous driving, zero-emission mobility, and digital networking are virtually impossible without advances in AI and deep learning. Combining the imagination of Volkswagen with NVIDIA, the leader in AI technology, enables us to take a big step into the future". At this year's Consumer Electronics Show Nvidia partnered with Volkswagen to introduce new features called Drive IX and Drive AR.

Volkswagen shares rise, carmaker announces Nvidia self-driving tech partnership

Charlie Nash is a reporter for Breitbart Tech. This is just one of the many partnerships that NVIDIA has inked to further its position in the self-driving technology arena. Two Xavier chipsets form part of a larger Nvidia platform for AI and self-driving, dubbed Pegasus. The company unveiled the chip back in 2016 and now it is shipping out to customers.

Notably, the first samples of the Xavier Drive will be rolled out in 2018's first quarter. The technology will enable so-called "intelligent co-pilot" capabilities based on processing sensor data inside and outside the vehicle. The company claims its silicon can perform 30 trillions of deep learning operations every second in an extremely energy-efficient manner, requiring only 30W to run.

Aurora was founded by Sterling Anderson, a former director of the semi-autonomous Autopilot program at Tesla; Drew Bagnell, who headed the autonomy and perception team at Uber's Advanced Technologies Center; and Urmson, the former head of Google's self-driving project. In total, Nvidia is now collaborating with more than 320 companies on self-driving vehicle and truck initiatives worldwide, including carmakers, auto parts suppliers and information technology firms.

Called NVIDIA Drive AR, the software is created to give drivers much more information about what's around them, as well as auto info.
