CES: Razer's Project Linda is an impressive laptop/smartphone hybrid

We have the phone an 8/10 score, which is pretty darn impressive for a first stab.

Project Linda features a built-in power bank that quickly charges the Razer Phone while docked.

For current Razer Phones, the company will release a software update later this month that includes the Netflix app and home widget.

But on the specs side, things are far more sparse, because this laptop is powered by the Razer Phone, a 6-inch Android device that's powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset.

Designed for mobility, the unibody CNC aluminum chassis of Razer Project Linda is just 0.59-inch (15 mm) thin and weighs under three pounds (1.25 kg) including the docked phone. "The Razer Phone's performance, display, and dual front-firing speakers combine seamlessly with Project Linda's larger screen, keyboard, and battery to provide the ultimate mobile hybrid setup for gaming, creativity, and productivity".

It's an idea that makes a lot of sense - using the brains of your phone but giving you the convenience of a keyboard and bigger screen - which is why manufacturers have been attempting it for years.

The concept of transforming a smartphone into a more traditional computer is nothing new. You can even use the phone's screen as a smart touchpad.

Razer has revealed a very unusual mix of laptop and mobile phone hardware in a bid to utilize its new Razer Phone.

"The 13.3" Quad HD touchscreen extends the 120Hz experience available on the Razer Phone to a larger display, providing fluid motion and vibrant visuals. So, when you insert the phone into the place where a mouse would normally be, all the content will be displayed on the touch screen at 4K and 120 Mhz with which Project Linda is equipped. Then again, the gaming-oriented Windows tablet called Project Fiona unveiled in 2012 did become a real, if short-lived, product sold as the Razer Edge. If not, does this news make you more tempted by one? Unfortunately, the Razer Project Linda does not have a price tag and since this is just a prototype, it does not appear to get into the mass production phase.

You can register on the Razer site to receive updates and announcements related to the project.
