Ibuprofen Could Make Healthy Men In Just Two Weeks

Within 14 days, testosterone-producing hormones in the men taking ibuprofen dropped, causing compensated hypogonadism, according to USA Today .

The researchers recruited 31 healthy men between the ages of 18 and 35.

The human brain compensates for testosterone deficiency by producing luteinizing hormone (LH), which sends a signal to the testicles to produce more testosterone.

The small study, which was published yesterday (Jan. 8) in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, found that men who took 1,200 milligrams of ibuprofen a day for six weeks developed a hormonal condition that is linked with reproductive problems. The condition arises when the body has to boost levels of testosterone because normal production in the testes has fallen.

Results showed that ibuprofen use led to an elevation of luteinizing hormone (LH) and a decreased testosterone/LH ratio, which is routinely used as a marker of testicular Leydig cell function.

Men who take high doses of ibuprofen for months at a time may be at greater risk of fertility issues and also other health problems, such as muscle wastage, erectile dysfunction and fatigue, scientists have found. Of course, there is a bright side to this new finding, and that is to limit your intake of ibuprofen.

Participants were split into two groups, with 14 receiving 600mg of ibuprofen twice a day two weeks before and 30 days after an exercise session, and the other acting as a control.

All 3 drugs are considered anti-androgenic, meaning they disrupt male hormones.

Compensated hypogonadism usually only affects the elderly or smokers, but taking ibuprofen increases a younger person's risk.

The study comes as several studies show that infertility rates are on the rise in several areas of the world.

As a fun added bonus, previous research has found a link between low testosterone levels and premature death. Hypogonadism is associated with impaired fertility, depression, heart failure, and stroke.

Now, before you panic, there's no suggestion yet that occasionally relying on an ibuprofen will make your balls shrivel up and die.

Though the exact reasons for the decline are not yet known; in a recent study, researchers have linked male infertility to Ibuprofen - a common painkiller. But researchers are concerned about long-term use among athletes.
