Raiders hire Gruden for some reason

Sixteen years after the Raiders traded him away, the team on Tuesday introduced Jon Gruden as coach for the second time.

Gruden was introduced Tuesday in front of a large crowd that included almost 50 former Raiders and nine Pro Football Hall of Famers as the coach Davis believes can carry Derek Carr and the Raiders back to the top.

After the playoff game against the New England Patriots deemed the "Tuck Rule Game", Gruden asked to be release to return to Florida to be closer with his family. Jon Gruden has returned to the Oakland Raiders after leaving the team in 2001. Mark Davis had finally reeled in his big fish - "Jon Gruden is Mark Davis's white whale", said Howie Long - and the Raiders did everything possible to make Gruden's (second) Alameda introduction a grand spectacle.

"I'm thrilled to be back here". I hope people understand the emotion inside.

"I feel a lot of responsibility to get the Raiders going again".

"At that point in time I just wanted to know if [Gruden] could help me figure out how to fix this franchise, because I felt that there was a lot of regression, obviously on the offensive side of the ball", Davis said. "I think he's proven that and it's up to us as a coaching staff to improve around him".

"The reality is I haven't changed much at all since 1998", Gruden said.

It's been awhile since Gruden has been on the sidelines, but there's no doubt that he is still one of the top coaching minds in the NFL. "They're going to get him, and how they deal with that could tell the whole story".

Jack Del Rio is a fine coach, and he did a great job reworking an Oakland defense that struggled mightily before his arrival. His contract with the Raiders is reportedly worth enough to probably fund his own mini-space program: $100 million for 10 years. I had a son here, some of my great memories in life were in Oakland and I want to give them two of the best years of football that I can possibly help deliver. So when the Raiders said that they complied with the Rooney Rule by interviewing Tee Martin and Bobby Johnson, they were really just covering their posteriors. This time around we are getting a wiser Gruden. "And by far to get Jon Gruden was the toughest". Gruden cited the back fractures Carr dealt with earlier in the year for his lack of success this season. He said he's eager to take over a team with a promising young quarterback in Carr.

The Raiders, who ended the 2016 season with a 12-4 record became a media darling. Though there is work to be done on that side of the ball for sure, the big knock on Del Rio is that his offense was rather stagnant this year, something that shouldn't have been the case with a pair of former first-round wide receivers and a quarterback who just received the largest contract in National Football League history. Gruden confirmed he'll be the play caller of said offense. So, I'm not sure why he's considered some quarterback genius.

Neither Gruden nor Davis would go into detail about the coach's contract but he did confirm he will not have an ownership stake in the team.

There has been a video shared around the internet in recent days of when Carr met Gruden during the coach's television "QB Camp" before the 2014 draft.

According to Gruden, he doesn't anticipate agreeing with everyone but intends to work with decision-makers in the building including McKenzie who still holds the general manager position.
